Q: Shakes have contains fructooligosaccharides as a fibre supplement which would very likely cause symptoms?
A:
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) is a type of carb that is built of a few sugars (that is what “oligo” means) 4, 5, 6 sugars long, but the bonds between those sugars’ we humans do not have the right enzymes to break down.
That is a long way to say they are non-digestible carbs, which is the definition of food fiber.
I do not know what “symptoms” this is referring to, but it would be what you would expect from eating any other type of food fiber.
I am not sure what is the recommendation for fiber consumption in Australia but here in the US is 25 – 35 grams per day, most of us don’t get anywhere close to that! so that is why the Complete drink mix contains FOS
