Q: Shakes have contains fructooligosaccharides as a fibre supplement which would very likely cause symptoms?
A:
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) is a type of carbohydrate that is built of a few sugars (that is what “oligo” means) 4, 5, 6 sugars long, but the bonds between those sugars’ are an indigestible carbohydrate which we humans do not have the right enzymes to break down .
That is a long way to say they are non-digestible carbs, which is the definition of food fibre.
I do not know what “symptoms” this is referring to, but it would be what you would expect from eating any other type of food fibre.
(an insoluble fibre). Both soluble and insoluble fibre are important for the human diet. Australia’s fibre recommendations are 25g per day for women and 30g per day for men. Here in the US is 25 – 35 grams per day, most of us don’t get anywhere close to that! so that is why the Complete drink mix contains FOS

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) also can be used as low calorie sweetener alternatives or added into prebiotic supplements. Our Complete does contain natural sweeteners as well as prebiotics.

Plant-foods such as asparagus, banana, glue agave chicory, tomatoes, onions and wheat and grains (as well as other fruits, vegetables) naturally contain FOS. Juice Plus+ products do contain some of these ingredients so therefore, Fructooligosaccharides would be present. Our Vanilla Complete has 5.7g soluble and 2g insoluble fibre (7.7g total) per serve and our Chocolate Complete has 5.7g soluble and 2.1g insoluble fibre (7.8g total) per serve. Read more about Complete’s nutritional information here.

If you have any concerns regarding fructooligosaccharides and your fibre intake, we recommend seeing your healthcare professional/nutritionist to determine whether this product is suitable for you.
