Q: Shakes have contains fructooligosaccharides as a fibre supplement which would very likely cause symptoms?
A:
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) is a type of carbohydrate that is built of a few sugars (that is what “oligo” means) 4, 5, 6 sugars long, but the bonds between those sugars’ we humans do not have the right enzymes to break down.
That is a long way to say they are non-digestible carbs, which is the definition of food fibre.
I do not know what “symptoms” this is referring to, but it would be what you would expect from eating any other type of food fibre.
Australia’s fibre recommendations are 25g per day for women and 30g per day for men. Here in the US is 25 – 35 grams per day, most of us don’t get anywhere close to that! so that is why the Complete drink mix contains FOS
