You ask whether people with diabetes should be taking juice Plus+®.

We believe that all Australians, and obviously some more than others, should be supplementing their diets with juice Plus+®, but this is especially so for people with diabetes. It is known that oxidants cause health related and cardiovascular problems and whilst populations eating diets rich in fruits and vegetables have a lower incidence of these things. Furthermore, these diets are associated with less blindness due to cataracts and/or macular degeneration and research has also shown that such diets also improve memory in older people. It is the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables which give the protection.

It is also known without dispute that higher levels of sugar in the blood, such as in people with diabetes, leads to an increase in oxidants and this, of course, puts people with diabetes at special risk. Research from Europe published in 1999 also shows that people with Type II diabetes have damage to their white blood cells (which combat infection) and the authors state that this is the reason why people with diabetes are so prone to infections. You will be aware that research performed by The Juice Plus Company and published within the past few months has shown that Juice Plus+® protects the white blood cells against damage by oxidants.

By eating a diet moderate in fruit, the person with diabetes, is also taking Juice Plus+®, could reach a desirable antioxidant status. We feel that is  obvious therefore that people with diabetes have a greater need for antioxidants than do non-diabetic people and that the diabetics should therefore eat far more fruits and vegetables than other people.

Unfortunately, all fruits and vegetables are converted to sugar in the human body and the diabetic patient must not eat them to excess and this particularly applies to fruit. To eat excessive amounts of fruit produces high blood sugar levels which then increases the oxidants with this far outweighing the good produced by the antioxidants in the fruit. There is no alternative for people with diabetes other than to restrict their fruit to approximately three pieces per day (most would eat one or two pieces at the most) while supplementing their antioxidants with juice Plus+®.

Again: Juice Plus also has no glycaemic index
