The Australian Dietary Guidelines for Older Populations include:
Dietary guideline 1:Â To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs.
Dietary guideline 2: Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from these five groups every day.
Dietary guideline 3: Limit intake of foods and drinks containing fat, added salt, added sugars and alcohol.
The effect of ageing includes changes in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, vitamin deficiencies associated with neurological damage (vit B12 deficiency), skin synthesis declines (Vitamin D deficiency), Osteoporosis (Calcium deficiency), low stomach acid affecting absorption (Iron and vitamin C deficiency).
Brain function is also dependent on adequate intakes of vitamins and minerals including:
·        Thiamin, Niacin, Zinc and Folate for mental health.
·        Vitamins B12, C & E for short term memory.
·        Folate, B6, B12, Iron and Vitamin E for cognition
