Juice Plus+ and Water Washed Soy

There are many people who have made it their mission in life to try to take down specific industries, foods, ingredients or companies. Some of these people do so because they are genuinely trying to help and have gotten information (right or wrong) that the product/ingredient/industry/company is out to harm people on purpose. Some of these people are negatively attacking others in order to sell their own stuff and some are just trying to get attention and know that the media loves a good conspiracy. With respect to soy, there are all 3 types out there now with little to no scientific support for their arguments.

If you trace back most anti-soy arguments, they originate at The Weston A. Price Foundation. This is an organisation that promotes meat and raw milk so clearly they have a reason to disrespect plant protein alternatives. If you look up the references that they use to promote their agenda, you will even find that many of them are studies that show very clear benefits of soy and no safety concerns but they are hoping that people are either too lazy or uniformed enough to see that.

This is part of the thyroid misconception for sure. The great news is that in the last 10 years there have been many studies published with respectable researchers in impeccable journals that show that soy does not negatively impact thyroid function in men or women. I have attached the reference to a review paper which highlights the details of this.

1. Messina M, Redmond G. Effects of soy protein and soybean isoflavones on thyroid function in healthy adults and hypothyroid patients: a review of the relevant literature. Thyroid. 2006;16(3):249-58.
